Apple, with the releases of the iPhone 6s and SE looked like they’d backed themselves into a bit of a corner. Whatever we thought the iPhone 7 was destined to be seemed to have been covered in the iPhone 6s. So great were those two iPhones, that people wondered how they were going to top them. More, how would Apple pull it off without a massive redesign for the iPhone 7?
All the fears disappeared when the iPhone 7 turned out to be simply the next step in the Apple Evolution. Apple took the process that had served them so well and expanded it, but it was still classic Apple. Just about every aspect had seen an upgrade from the 6 series. Apple were showing that they knew exactly what they were doing, and doing it well.
Sometimes, Apple are an easy target for users of Android and other phones, but no more.
The iPhone 7 shrugs off the feeling that Apple were coasting along on loyalty and past reputation. Instead, it’s clear that the company have been working hard to produce something brilliant and innovative.
Actually, it would be easy to think that the iPhone 7 is so different from the 6 that they’re completely unrelated. But that would mean disregarding Apple’s history-making line of previous iPhones. It would also mean ignoring the fact that they’ve never taken bigger steps than needed. When designing and building the next installment in the series, controlled expansion was always king.
A brand new, quad-core A10 CPU with a six-core graphics processor mean no lag or stutter. Watching hi-res video is just as silky smooth as it can be. Playing the most demanding games is a breeze and there’s never a hint of lag. The 12MP rear camera has optical image stabilisation and dual-tone quad LED flash. Geo-tagging, face detection, HDR, panorama are also built right in. Simultaneous 4K video recording on both cameras is an amazing addition to the arsenal. Plus 8MP image capture whilst recording 4K video takes the iPhone 7 to new heights.
We expect upgrades with new releases, but there are upgrades and there are upgrades. The iPhone 7 takes huge steps towards a new goal, and manages to take us all with it.
As well as 4K video recording, you can also record 720p video at a whopping 240 frames per second, and 1080p Full HD video at 60fps. This means superb quality playback, and the potential for super slow motion recordings.
There’s now a 7MP front camera, making Facetime a truly wondrous experience. The camera also has face detection, HDR, panorama capture, 1080p Full HD recording at 30fps or 720p at 240fps. These are almost unheard of in front cameras, which are usually designed for the selfie generation and little more. It makes sense, though, that Apple have invested so much time in making Facetime the quality product it is. And it is right that the camera should match it pixel for pixel.
Apple use technology as a starting point for usability, and make usability the reason for the technology. This is what makes iPhones among the very best there is and the iPhone 7 in particular.
Somehow, Apple have squeezed in a 1960mAh battery into the iPhone 7, and have made the whole thing massively efficient. You can get 14 hours of talk time and a whopping 10 days of standby from a single charge. If you need 14 hours of Wi-Fi internet use, or 13 hours of video playback, here it is. Or even if you want 40 hours of audio, then the iPhone 7 will give it to you.
4G across enough frequencies to make the iPhone compatible with just about every GSM network in the world adds to the versatility. Dual-band 802.11 ac wi-fi with hotspot, Bluetooth 4.2 and the most accurate GPS positioning available anywhere are included. As is Apple Pay and, of course, the lovely Siri to help you along every step of the way.
Sometimes, it’s easy to forget that Apple were the people who started the smartphone revolution. And then along comes a device like the iPhone 7 as a timely reminder as to why they still lead the pack.
