After the massive success of the iPhone 6 Plus, a successor was inevitable from Apple. It soon became evident that they were going to go down a similar path with the iPhone 7. All of us just waited for them to produce another in their “phablet” style Plus line. Visually, the iPhone 7 Plus is similar to the 6 Plus, being only 1/10th of a millimetre bigger in all directions. Inside, however, there are several upgrades which take the iPhone 7 to a new level.
At the heart of any iPhone is a custom-designed CPU, and the iPhone 7 Plus sports an A10, 2.34gHz quad core processor. This brings a significant speed boost over the 6 Plus, together with a new six core dedicated graphics chip. If you want ultra-creamy smooth performance on everything from games to videos, here it is.
iPhones, largely due to the way Apple has managed to make the hardware and software into a single entity. Doing so means everything is perfectly coordinated. iPhones have never really had an issue with performance but, even so, with the A10 processor, it’s a new game altogether. The iPhone 7 Plus responds instantly to every single screen tap or button press.
One of the biggest things about a larger body size, is that there is a lot more room for things that just don’t fit into a smaller form factor. Optical Image Stabilisation gives shake-free pictures on both rear cameras. That’s right, “both” rear cameras. The iPhone 7 Plus is equipped with two 12MP rear cameras, to get the best results on both wide-angle and telephoto pictures.
Ordinarily, zoom on a smartphone is digital, meaning the pixels need to be created by the camera when you zoom in. This causes quality that is always questionable, to say the least.
With the dual camera setup of the 7 Plus, it actually gives you an optical 2x magnification. so image quality remains at the highest level all the time. This arrangement doesn’t appear on the iPhone 7, only the Plus.
The front “Facetime” camera is 5MP, and has seen a major overhaul. The new configuration allows 50% more light in than the front camera on the iPhone 6. In practise, this significantly improves both image and video quality.
The rear cameras have a quad LED flash, and the front camera uses Apple’s more usual Retina flash. The quality given by the rear quad-flash setup, in even very dark conditions, is amazing.
Okay, never mind that, but we want to tell you about a couple of new things on the iPhone 7 Plus. iPhones, historically, have generally been sturdier than many smartphone brands. Now Apple have added IP67 compliance, making them dust resistant, and water resistant to a depth of 1 metre for 30 minutes. You can’t go swimming with it, but drops in water or getting spills on it are no longer the threat they were. Those stomach churns as you hear the splash are history.
Up to now, iPhones have always had a physical Home button, but no longer. The button is still there, but now it’s a purely digital affair which vibrates to the touch. You notice a small difference at first, but it allows the button to be used for many more things than just a single press. The button is also a fingerprint sensor which itself opens up a new world of usefulness. Everything from locking and unlocking the phone to use in apps is available.
PayPal and online banking are just two examples of fingerprints being used to login to accounts.
All the usual connection options are here, Bluetooth 4.2, GPD, Apple Pay and dual-band 802.11 b/g/n/ac wi-fi. 4G compatibility with 3G fallback keeps you connected just about anywhere.
The huge 2900mAh battery gives 21hrs of talk time or up to 384 hours of standby. That’s 16 days, by the way. In normal use, you won’t outrun – or outlast, the iPhone 7 Plus.
Apple’s best phablet yet, the iPhone 7 plus is big enough and bold enough to keep you happy for years. As a phone, it makes a terrific tablet.
